Arrestance is just a fancy word for filtering capacity. All Air-Care filters come in one of two types of arrestance - either 94% or 82%. The 94% arrestance filter provides higher filtering capacity by trapping up to 94% of particles in the air. We also offer filters with an 82% arrestance. This provides slightly less filtering capacity, but is less restrictive, allowing greater airflow through the filter. An 82% arrestance filter would be appropriate using the following formula. If the filter square footage is less than the tonnage of the unit, we recommend an 82% arrestance filter.

How To Determine If You Need an 82% or 94% Arrestance Filter
Here's an example: If you have a 16x25 filter and a 2.5 ton unit, the square footage of the filter is 2.8 sq feet (16 x 25 / 144 = 2.8). Since 2.8 is greater than 2.5, you are fine with using a 94% arrestance filter in this system. If the filter size is 12x18, the square footage of this filter is 1.5 (12 x 18 / 144 = 1.5). Since 1.5 is less than 2.5, we would recommend an 82% arrestance filter in this case.

All 94% filters and the flexible frame 82% filters contain an EPA registered anti-microbial material to inhibit the mold and bacteria growth on the filter surface.

Frame Types

Air-Care manufactures electrostatic air filters with 3 different frame types: Gold, Silver or Flexible.

Gold Frames

Our Gold Frame filters are made with a premium quality extruded aluminum, gold anodized frame with a durable and attractive finish. The frame is 4 separate pieces with a single screw fastening each corner together. The frame is strong and sturdy. Gold Frame filters come only in the standard 1" depth.

Gold Frame 82% Arrestance Gold Frame 94% Arrestance
Gold Frame Electrostatic Filter 82% Arrestance Gold Frame Electrostatic Filter 94% Arrestance
Silver Frames

Our Silver Frame filters are made from a single piece of roll-formed galvanized steel fastened together at one corner with a single rivet. This frame type is more cost-effective than the gold frame, but is not quite as strong and sturdy. Silver Frame filters are available in either 1/2", 1" or 2" depths. The 1/2" (7/16" Actual) silver rigid framed filters have 2 layers of polypropylene between 2 layers of expanded steel for improved air flow and rigidity. Our 2" rigid framed filters are configured with the same construction as the 1" Electra silver, but with a 1.5" white polyester ultra high loft impingement filtering center layer.

This filter has the same ratings as its one inch counterpart. We also have 1" & 2" filter frames and disposable pads that consist of a roll formed metal frame with one layer of expanded metal support secured to one side. The filter material is tucked into the frame and is held by the fibers catching on the expanded metal support and the air flow. When soiled, it is easily removed for disposal and replaced by a clean piece of filter material pad.

Many commercial air systems use banks of 20 or 40+ 2" thick pleated filters. Our high arrestance, low resistance permanent filters, however, will give your commercial accounts an economic alternative to the disposable filter.

Flexible Frames

Our Flexible Frame filters are made from sewing flexible polypropylene webbing around the edge of the filter so the frame is actually a flexible fabric rather than metal. Flexible framed electrostatic air filters conform to the same specifications as the rigid metal framed filters. The 82% Flexible Frame filters are about 3/8" depth. The 94% Flexible Frame filters are about 5/8" depth. The 94% flexible framed filters have a 1/2" polyester layer sandwiched between 2 layers of polypropylene with a polypropylene webbing frame sewn around the edge and fit most 1" applications.

Standard Sizes vs Custom Sizes

Every filter we manufacture is either a standard size or a custom size. The length and width for a standard size air filter is undercut by 3/8" to accomodate standard size openings. This is consistent with other filter manufacturers. For example, if you are replacing a 25" x 25" disposable filter, then you need a standard size 25" x 25" electrostatic air filter. The actual size of this filter is actually 24 5/8" x 24 5/8".

A custom size filter however is cut to the exact sizes you specify. So a custom size 25" x 25" filter will be exactly 25" x 25" - there is no undercut. The difference is very important - so if you have questions, please contact us.

Standard Sizes Available
8 X 24 X 1 12 X 20 X 1 14 X 20 X 1 16 X 16 X 1 16 X 36 X 1 18 X 36 X 1 20 X 32 X 1
10 X 10 X 1 12 X 24 X 1 14 X 24 X 1 16 X 20 X 1 18 X 18 X 1 19 X 27 X 1 21 X 21 X 1
10 X 20 X 1 12 X 25 X 1 14 X 25 X 1 16 X 24 X 1 18 X 20 X 1 20 X 20 X 1 24 X 24 X 1
10 X 24 X 1 12 X 30 X 1 14 X 30 X 1 16 X 25 X 1 18 X 24 X 1 20 X 24 X 1 24 X 30 X 1
10 X 30 X 1 12 X 36 X 1 15 X 20 X 1 16 X 30 X 1 18 X 25 X 1 20 X 25 X 1 25 X 25 X 1
12 X 12 X 1 14 X 14 X 1 15 X 25 X 1 16 X 32 X 1 18 X 30 X 1 20 X 30 X 1

  • Standard Size Filters will follow industry standard and be 3/8" undercut, i.e. a 12 x 20 will measure 11 5/8" x 19 5/8". The width of the frames are 7/16", 7/8", and 1 ¾" for ½", 1", and 2" filters, respectively. Flexible frames are approximately 3/8" thick at the edges and 5/8"' thick at the center. Note: 1/2" frame filters are only available in 82% arrestance.
  • Custom sizes are also available, please specify the EXACT dimension that you want the FILTER FRAME to ACTUALLY measure. Custom Size filters are NOT undercut.
  • All electrostatic air filters have an 1/8" overall tolerance. This means the thickness of the frame could vary by as much as 1/8".

I have two Electra Silver "Permanent high-tech filters; never needs replacement" with lifetime warranties for our two air-handlers. I removed them for cleaning today, following the instructions, which I have used in the past. However, when I went to retrieve them after letting them air-dry, I saw that the Polyester Filter inside has slid down on both, leaving a bare area on both. I see no way to open the frame to correct the problem, and I am wondering if your instruction sheet should specify to "lay flat to air dry"?
Can you advise me on how to correct this problem so I may continue using these filters? Thanks!

Hi Lucas,

What sizes you need and how many you need to carry is based on how many jobs you do every week and the various standard filter sizes for your area. We recommend going to Home Depot and Lowes and taking note of the standard filter sizes that they carry. That will give you a good idea of what sizes you need to stock.

The product specs for the Electra Gold list anti-microbiral materials. What specifically does this mean? Are there additives in the layers that kill microbes? Or do you simply mean that bacteria and molds do not feed on (for lack of a better word) on the materials in the filters?

The polypropylene material found in the 94% filters (and flexible 82% filters) are treated with an anti-microbial agent. This means the material will inhibit the growth of mold and other similar micro-organisms.
